US-Iran tension heightens as Trump govt blames Tehran for oil tanker attack

June 16
Following alleged attacks on two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, United States of America’s Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, blamed Iran. He said that no ‘proxy group’ operating in the area had the expertise to carry out such attacks. Pompeo also said that such ‘unprovoked attacks are a threat to international peace’. The US also released a video allegedly showing Iranian soldiers removing an unexploded mine from one of the tankers. Tension between Washington and Tehran have intensified after the former pulled out of a nuclear treaty signed by Donald Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama.
